I. THE GRAMMAR OF SPEAKING SIDEWAYS
There is a grammar to the things that cannot be said directly. Immigrant communities learn it early. Exile communities refine it across generations. The dispossessed and the assimilated and those who are somehow both simultaneously develop a fluency in indirection that the comfortable never require: a capacity to carry what is unbearable by encoding it inside something else – a story about another people, a landscape that is not quite the landscape remembered, a grief assigned to characters whose names are borrowed from the culture that displaced your own.
This essay is about that grammar. It is about the way unbearable truths find bearable containers. It is about how film – particularly Hollywood film at the height of the studio system – functioned as a translation machine for immigrant emotional experience, capable of holding what its makers could not announce. And it is about one film in particular: Cavalcade, the 1933 Fox production of Noël Coward’s play, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture and was received by its audiences as a stately celebration of British imperial continuity – and which, read differently, carries inside its English pageantry the emotional architecture of an Irish immigrant’s unfinished reckoning with belonging, loss, and the terrible cost of almost arriving.

The producer was Winfield Sheehan. He was Irish American, the son of immigrants, a man who had built himself into the American establishment through tenacity and considerable political intelligence, who ran Fox Film Corporation with authority and taste, and who brought Cavalcade to the screen at the precise moment when the Depression was stripping his industry of its certainties and his own position within it was beginning to erode. That he chose this particular story – about a household that endures, about people who serve and are worn down by their service, about proximity to power they cannot access – is not a biographical coincidence. It is the kind of choice a person makes when the available public narratives align unexpectedly with private ones, when official culture briefly offers a container adequate to what one privately carries.
The argument of this essay is not that Cavalcade is secretly Irish. That framing is too simple, and the essay that followed from it would be less interesting than the film deserves. The argument is more particular: that the emotional architecture of Cavalcade – its preoccupation with loss, continuity, class aspiration, restrained grief, historical proximity to power without full possession of it – reflects an Irish immigrant sensibility operating beneath the official British narrative, available to Sheehan as a form through which his own experience could be encoded without explicit confession. The grief in this film could only be spoken sideways. The sideways speaking is the subject.
II. WINFIELD SHEEHAN: BELONGING ON BORROWED GROUND
Winfield Sheehan was born in 1883 in Buffalo, New York, to Irish immigrant parents. The details of his early life are characteristic of a particular generation of Irish American ambition: the move from working-class Buffalo to New York City, employment as a police reporter, then as secretary to the police commissioner, then as a man who understood how power worked and how to be useful to those who held it. By 1912 he had moved into the film business; by the early 1920s he was general manager of Fox Film Corporation, one of the most significant positions in Hollywood. He was, by any measure, a man who had arrived.
Arrival, for the Irish American of Sheehan’s generation, was a complicated condition. It was not the same as belonging. The Irish had come to America in waves of dispossession – famine, poverty, political collapse – and had spent the subsequent decades constructing an American identity that was always partly performance: the assertion of respectability against the accumulated caricatures of the paddy and the Fenian and the drunk, the demonstration that one could be fully American while the memory of not being fully English, not fully welcome, not quite inside the house that others owned remained as a structural feature of the emotional landscape. The Irish were the most assimilated of the non-Anglo immigrant groups, and assimilation had its own costs. It required a certain management of what was carried, a certain fluency in the presentation of belonging that the inwardly unresolved have always had to develop.
Sheehan operated at the highest levels of an industry that was itself predominantly the creation of immigrant ambition. The moguls who built Hollywood – Mayer, Goldwyn, Laemmle, the Warner brothers, Zukor – were largely Jewish immigrants or the sons of Jewish immigrants, men for whom American success was inseparable from a particular kind of cultural ventriloquism: the production of quintessentially American stories by people who were acquiring Americanness as they went. The Irish occupied a different position in this ecology – more assimilated, less visibly Other, Catholic rather than Jewish – but the structural condition was recognisable: men who had built themselves into the American establishment while carrying something that the establishment did not quite have a language for.
What Sheehan built at Fox was a studio committed to prestige: literary adaptations, historical epics, the respectability that comes from being associated with cultural seriousness. This was not merely commercial calculation, though it was that too. It was also the project of a man who understood that cultural authority was a form of belonging, that to be associated with the making of serious art was to be, in some not entirely legible sense, inside a tradition from which one’s origins excluded you. When Cavalcade was announced in London, Sheehan cabled his enthusiasm immediately. The question worth sitting with is: What, exactly, did he recognise in it?
The Producer as Encoder
The conventional account of film production assigns creative agency to the director. This is a useful fiction for criticism but an inadequate description of how studio-era Hollywood actually worked. The producer was the institutional intelligence of the operation: the person who selected properties, hired directors, controlled budgets, supervised edits, and determined, through a thousand small decisions, the emotional register of the finished film. Frank Lloyd directed Cavalcade. Winfield Sheehan produced it, and his production choices – the casting, the retention of the Bridges subplot, the formal decision to let the servants’ story persist across the film’s full length rather than contracting it to a few illustrative scenes – are authorial decisions as much as anything that happened on set.
The film that emerged from Fox in 1933 was not Sheehan’s vision in any simple sense. But the decision to bring this particular story to this particular medium at this particular moment was his, and it is that decision – what it reveals about what he saw in the material, what he needed from it, what it allowed him to encode without announcement – that this essay is concerned with.
The most significant encoding was the Bridges family. Coward’s original play had its servants; their function in the theatrical version was partly comic, partly pathetic, partly structural. What Sheehan’s film does with the Bridges is something more: it refuses to contract them. Their story is given length, continuity, specificity. Alfred’s decline is tracked across decades. Fanny’s trajectory from domestic proximity to music hall performance is followed with an attention that the official narrative does not strictly require. Someone decided that the servants’ story mattered enough to be held in full. That decision is where the encoding begins.
III. THE EMOTIONAL ARCHITECTURE OF EXILE
There is a cluster of feelings that constitute what might be called the immigrant emotional architecture: the specific quality of grief and aspiration and ambivalence that attaches to the experience of having left one world without fully arriving in another. It is not nostalgia, exactly, though it contains nostalgia. It is not shame, exactly, though it contains something adjacent to shame. It is more like a permanent structural dislocation – the sense of belonging in two places simultaneously, which amounts, at its most acute, to belonging fully in neither.
The Irish experience of this dislocation has a particular historical specificity. The famine of the 1840s produced not only a mass displacement but a particular emotional grammar around that displacement: grief at what was lost, guilt at survival, ambivalence about the country left behind, and a complicated relationship with the culture of the country arrived in, which offered opportunity but withheld belonging in ways that were sometimes explicit and sometimes structural and sometimes merely atmospheric. The deepest forms of cultural memory are carried not in explicit narrative but in the body and in practice – in posture, in gesture, in the habitual ways of moving through space and relating to authority. The Irish carried their history this way, and the Irish American generation carried a translation of it: the memory of a memory, the grief of a grief, the particular inheritance of those who know they come from somewhere difficult without being entirely certain what that somewhere was.

This inheritance was not typically speakable in the explicit public registers of early twentieth-century America. The Irish had worked hard to be American, and being American required a presentation of forward motion, of having left the old world cleanly, of not being encumbered by a history that the dominant culture associated with poverty and defeat. What one carried from Ireland was carried internally, in the emotional atmosphere of the household, in the stories that circulated obliquely, in the particular combination of fierce aspiration and deep anxiety about whether one had truly arrived.
Film provided a container for this material that ordinary life did not. What the immigrant moguls understood practically was that the emotion their audiences brought to the cinema was real, that it could be engaged and shaped by the stories on screen, and that the most effective stories were those that connected with something carried rather than something simply observed. The prestige historical film – the family melodrama across decades, the story of endurance and loss – was a particularly effective container because it offered the satisfactions of historical narrative while operating simultaneously on the level of feeling that ordinary life made difficult to acknowledge.
Belonging Without Ownership
The title of this essay names the condition that organises its argument. The house was never ours. The phrase operates at every level of the story being told.
It operates literally: the Bridges family lives in the Marryot house, serves it, organises their lives around its requirements, and does not own it and will not inherit it. Their labour is essential to its continuity; their belonging is conditional on their usefulness. When usefulness ends, so does the conditional belonging. This is the film’s most honest statement about how class functions: not through dramatic exclusion but through the structural terms of a belonging that was always borrowed.
It operates for the Irish in England and in Ireland itself: a people who had inhabited a cultural and linguistic tradition that successive colonial administrations worked to render illegible, who had built and maintained and served the institutional fabric of a state that classified them as subjects rather than citizens. The Penal Laws, the Act of Union, the famine relief policies: all expressed, with varying degrees of explicitness, the same structural proposition – you may live here, but the house is not yours.
It operates for the Irish American immigrant in the America of Sheehan’s generation: admitted, assimilated, useful, present at the centres of cultural production, and yet aware – sometimes explicitly, more often atmospherically – of the conditions attached to that presence. The house of American cultural authority was never quite theirs either, even as they built it and ran it with considerable skill.
And it operates for Hollywood itself – that peculiar institution built almost entirely by people whose relationship to mainstream American culture was conditional and aspirational. The studio system produced the most powerful dream machinery in human history, and the people who ran it were, in many cases, people for whom dreaming was a survival strategy long before it became a business.
IV. THE FILM AS TRANSLATION MACHINE
Cavalcade is, on its surface, an act of Anglophilia. Noël Coward wrote it as a patriotic gesture at a moment of British national anxiety. The Theatre Royal Drury Lane production in 1931 presented thirty years of British history as a pageant of continuity: battered, diminished, but surviving, and capable of dignity. The toast that closes the play – to the hope that Britain would find dignity and greatness and peace again – was received by its original audiences as a statement of resilience. Coward meant it sincerely.
What Sheehan saw in it was something else as well. The story of a household that endures through a century of loss, that maintains its form while what it contains is slowly altered, that presents the face of continuity while internally registering a kind of accumulated grief that the social form requires to be suppressed – this is a story that has a specific resonance for anyone whose relationship to continuity is complicated by a history of displacement. The Marryot household endures; but the story of how the Bridges household fails to endure runs alongside it, structurally necessary and structurally subordinate, as the counter-narrative that the official story requires in order to define itself against.
Hollywood in 1933 was built on translation. The stories it told were rarely the stories of those who made it; they were translations of those stories into idioms that American culture could receive. The immigrant experience – displacement, aspiration, the cost of assimilation – was not a story that could be told directly in the commercial cinema of the early 1930s. It was, however, a story that could be told sideways: through the story of English servants who endure without owning, of a family that persists in the margins of a history that is not quite theirs, of proximity to power without its inheritance.
The Bridges as Translation
Alfred Bridges does not fail because he is weak. He fails because the structure that needed him had no further use for him. He comes back from the Boer War altered – as soldiers do, as the displaced do, as anyone does who has been required to give what the structure demanded and then returned to civilian life without the apparatus to make sense of the cost. The pub, the drinking, the slow diminishment – this is a structural account of what happens to people who have served a system that does not recognise their service as a claim.
The Irish knew this trajectory intimately. Generation after generation had served in British armies, in English households, in the infrastructure of a colonial economy, and the return – to Ireland or to America – had rarely included acknowledgement that their service constituted a debt. What it included, more typically, was precisely what Alfred receives: a formal end of the relationship, no ceremony, an absence treated by the surrounding structure as unremarkable. Social forgetting of this kind works not through suppression but through the withdrawal of the occasions on which memory might be marked. Alfred’s disappearance from the narrative demonstrates this at the level of film form: he is not erased, he is simply not remembered, which amounts to the same thing from the perspective of the one who disappears.
Fanny’s trajectory is the assimilation story. She grows up adjacent to the Marryot children, educated by proximity if not formal provision, learning how the possessing class moves through the world. As an adult she performs – in music halls, for the class her family served – and the performance is real competence converted into something the market will pay for. She is good at what she does. She is also, structurally, doing what her mother did: serving, in a different register, the same people. The form has changed. The structural position has not.
This is the assimilation paradox that Irish Americans of Sheehan’s generation understood with particular clarity: that successful integration into American culture often required the performance of exactly those qualities – entertainment, charm, the ability to put others at ease – that had been shaped by a history of serving those with more power. The talent was genuine. The structural terms on which it operated were inherited. Fanny performs not in spite of her history but because of it, and the film records this without commentary – which is its most honest and most devastating move.
The Official Story and the Story It Carries
The Marryots endure. This is what the official story of Cavalcade insists on, and it is true: the household survives its losses, absorbs its grief with dignity, maintains its form. Jane Marryot’s stillness at the Armistice ball – her inability to rejoice at the ceasefire that has come too late for one of her sons – is the film’s most celebrated image of stoic grief, and it earns its power honestly. Diana Wynyard’s performance communicates something real: the cost of restraint, the particular exhaustion of a grief that cannot find its form in public expression.
But the film is doing something more interesting than celebrating this restraint. It is also showing, through the formal distribution of its attention, which grief gets to be restrained and which grief simply disappears. Jane’s grief is held at length – the camera lingers, the editing gives her stillness room to register, the score creates a container of quiet around her. Alfred’s dissolution has already occurred, processed quickly and off to the side, without the formal apparatus of attention that the film deploys for the household that owns the story. The political question of whose losses are publicly mournable is enacted here not in dialogue or explicit statement but in the distribution of screen time, the allocation of musical attention, the editing decisions that determine which grief is given room to breathe.
The film holds both stories simultaneously: the official story of Marryot endurance and the counter-memory of Bridges diminishment. It cannot give them equal weight – the genre and the production context of 1933 will not permit that – but it refuses to let the counter-memory dissolve entirely. The Bridges persist, reduced and marginal, to the end. This persistence is the film’s most significant formal choice, and it is a choice that required a producer who understood why the persistence mattered.
V. INDIRECTNESS AS SUBJECT
The central claim of this essay is not about hidden authorial intention. It is not that Winfield Sheehan consciously decided to encode an Irish immigrant memoir inside an English imperial narrative. Conscious encoding of that kind is rare; what is far more common, and far more interesting, is the way that people are drawn to stories that carry what they carry, that the selection of material reflects something that cannot be fully articulated but can be felt in the choices themselves.
Sheehan brought Cavalcade to Fox because he understood, at some level that may not have been available to explicit statement, that the story it told was a story he knew. The household that endures. The servants who serve and are not seen. The class aspiration that succeeds formally and costs privately. The grief that is real and is given no ceremony. These were not abstract themes for a man whose family had come from Ireland, who had built himself into the American establishment through a combination of intelligence and political skill and the particular kind of tenacity that comes from knowing, in your bones, that the house you are standing in was not built for you.
Indirectness is the subject because it is the mechanism. People and cultures tell their most important stories indirectly when direct telling is not available – when the available public narratives cannot accommodate what needs to be said, when the cost of explicit statement is too high, when the grammar of the surrounding culture has no form for the content that needs a form. The immigrant experience generates indirectness as a survival strategy: you learn to speak in the available idioms, to tell your story through the stories that the culture will receive, to encode what you carry inside containers that the market can sell and audiences can absorb without being asked to recognise what they are receiving.
The grief could only be spoken sideways. The sideways speaking is the subject.
Cavalcade is a mimicry text in this sense: it is an almost-English film carrying inside its almost-perfect reproduction of English imperial sentiment a remainder that the reproduction cannot quite contain. The Bridges family is that remainder. They are the trace of what the official story cannot accommodate and cannot entirely suppress. The exile’s experience – living simultaneously in two times and two places, the memory of what was left and the reality of where one is, held in permanent and irresolvable tension – is precisely what the film’s formal structure enacts: moving through official British time while simultaneously carrying the private time of the Bridges household, where history lands differently and the same years that constitute a pageant for the Marryots constitute a slow diminishment for Alfred and Fanny.
Hollywood as Container
It is worth pausing on what Hollywood provided that other cultural forms did not. The Irish American immigrant community had its own press, its own political networks, its own social institutions – but these were explicitly Irish American, they spoke within the community and did not address the broader culture. Film was different. Film reached everyone, including the people who had made it, and the emotional registers the immigrant moguls found most compelling – loss, continuity, the cost of assimilation, the endurance of the household under historical pressure – were registers that their own experience had made them sensitive to, whether or not they articulated this connection explicitly.
The prestige historical film was a particularly effective container because it offered cultural legitimacy alongside emotional release. To watch Cavalcade in 1933 was to participate in a serious cultural event, to receive history and feel something real about it. What was being felt might have had roots in experiences that the film did not explicitly name – experiences of displacement, of belonging without ownership, of proximity to power without its inheritance – but the film provided the formal occasion for those feelings to be present without requiring explicit acknowledgement. This is what the best containers do: they hold more than they announce.
Coward was appalled by what Hollywood had done to his play. He found the Fox production grandiose and aesthetically coarse. He was right that they had changed it. He may not have understood that what they had changed it into was something with its own integrity – a translation that carried not only his emotional content but theirs, an overlay of immigrant feeling on top of imperial pageantry that the original could not have contained.
VI. THE FILM READ AGAIN
To watch Cavalcade knowing who Sheehan was and where he came from is to experience it differently. This is not a claim that the film is better than previously thought, or that its imperialism should be excused on grounds of its immigrant subtexts. It is a claim that the film is richer and more internally conflicted than it appears on its surface, and that the conflict is the interesting thing.
The opening scene: Jane Marryot at the window on New Year’s Eve, 1899. She holds herself. The century is arriving and the correct behaviour is composure. Behind her, in the kitchen, Ellen Bridges is not composed; she weeps, loudly and without apology, and is quickly edited past. The cut between these two registers of grief – formal and informal, held and released, public and domestic – is the film’s thesis stated in editing. It is also, read from a different angle, a statement about which emotional inheritance you have been given: whether you have learned to grieve with the apparatus of ceremony, or whether your grief simply happens, undignified and unreceived and passed quickly.
The Boer War sequences: Robert Marryot goes to war as an officer; Alfred Bridges goes as a private. They return – both of them – to a Britain that has processed the war as national experience and moved on. But the return is not the same. Robert returns to a household that has maintained his place and receives him back into its form with appropriate ceremony. Alfred returns to a household that needed him when he was away and needs him differently now that he is back and has been changed by what the war required of him. The household has no form for what the war cost Alfred. It has forms for what it cost Robert.
Fanny’s music-hall scenes: she performs for audiences that include the class her family served. She has learned, from a childhood spent adjacent to the Marryot household, how that class moves and what it wants from entertainment. Her performance is technically accomplished and emotionally intelligent and structurally the same position her mother occupied – service, in a different costume. The film presents this without irony and without sentimentality, which is its clearest demonstration of what it means to carry a history without the narrative that would allow it to be named.
The Armistice ball: Jane Marryot sits still while the world celebrates. The camera holds her. The score quiets around her. She is given the formal apparatus of public mourning: the lingering camera, the stillness, the acknowledgement that what she carries is real and significant and worth the pause. Alfred Bridges, by this point, has already gone – diminished out of the narrative quietly, his disappearance unremarked. The war has damaged both households. The formal grammar of the film’s mourning is available to one of them and withheld from the other.
The final sequence: Jane proposes a toast. Let us couple the future of England with the past of England. The sentiment is Coward’s, earnest and elegiac. What the film carries underneath that conclusion – the Bridges counter-narrative, the account of how the future of England was built on the unacknowledged labour and the unremembered grief of those who served it without owning it – does not get a toast. It gets the film’s structural attention across its full length, held in the margins, persistent. This is the form that the available culture provided. It was not justice. It was something.
The Audience That Knew
When Cavalcade opened in America in January 1933, it was received as an English film – a celebration of British endurance that American audiences could admire from sympathetic distance. The reviews praised its scope and dignity. The Academy gave it Best Picture. It was the prestige success Sheehan had intended.
But there was also an audience for whom the film operated at a second level – an audience of immigrant and first-generation Americans who recognised, without being able to articulate what they recognised, the emotional architecture of the Bridges story. The Irish American communities of the industrial cities were an audience for whom the experience of serving a structure that did not fully receive you, of aspiring toward a belonging that remained conditional, of carrying a grief for which the surrounding culture had no ceremony, was not an abstraction. They came to Cavalcade and felt something about the Bridges family that the official reception of the film as British pageantry did not entirely account for. The indirectness of the encoding was part of its power: you could feel it without having to say what you were feeling, which was appropriate, because what you were feeling did not have an easy public form.
VII. CRAFT, DISTANCE, AND THE REACH OF THE ARGUMENT
The claim that grief can only sometimes be spoken directly – that indirectness is not evasion but a necessary formal condition for approaching certain kinds of experience – extends beyond the specific case of Cavalcade and beyond the specific history of Irish American cinema. It names something true about how cultural memory works, how inherited experience moves through time, and how the arts provide a container adequate to what ordinary public language cannot hold.
Exile communities have always told their stories sideways. Polish émigré writers encoded the experience of Soviet occupation inside formal experiments that could circulate without triggering censorship. Caribbean writers in England examined the condition of belonging nowhere in narratives ostensibly about something else. Jewish American novelists of the mid-century examined the grammar of assimilation through stories about families that were transparently their own but named differently, located elsewhere, given a fictional distance that allowed the examination to proceed. The indirectness was not dishonesty. It was the available form for material that could not be approached directly.
There is a concept in memory studies for the relationship of the second generation to the trauma of the first: postmemory, the inheritance so powerful and so present that it constitutes memory even though the inheriting generation has no direct experience of the events that produced it. Postmemory is transmitted through the atmosphere of the household – through what is not said, through the quality of certain silences, through the altered register of voice when certain subjects are approached. It is, precisely, an inherited emotional architecture without narrative clarity. The immigrant filmmaker who carries this inheritance, like the child who grows up inside it, is not without resources – but those resources require a form through which to operate.
This is the function that Sheehan’s Cavalcade performs, however imperfectly and however inadvertently: the carrying of an immigrant emotional history inside a form that the surrounding culture would receive, the encoding of grief that could not be spoken directly in a narrative that allowed it to be felt. The human need for forms adequate to what is carried – and the search, sometimes desperate, sometimes serendipitous, for a container that will hold it without requiring it to be announced – is not a historical curiosity. It is what the arts have always done when other forms have failed.
VIII. THE HOUSE THAT HELD THE STORY

The film that resulted was received as a celebration of British imperial continuity. It was also – for those who brought the right kind of attention, or the right kind of history – a record of what continuity costs the people who make it possible: the labour, the grief, the conditional belonging, the slow diminishment of those who serve without owning. The Bridges family is not redeemed by Cavalcade. They are held in it, imperfectly, in the margins, with less ceremony than their counterparts receive. But they are held. And the holding matters.
That is what form does at its most honest. It does not resolve. It does not redeem. It holds: the experience that could not be named directly, the grief that had no ceremony, the story that the official narrative could carry only sideways. Craft gives distance without denial. The distance is not evasion. It is the formal condition under which the unbearable becomes thinkable, the displaced becomes speakable, the inherited becomes something one can finally, slowly, begin to put down.
The house was never ours. The story was always ours. Finding the form to tell it – that is the work.
