Evert Jan van Leeuwen received his PhD (with distinction) from Leiden University, the Netherlands in 2006 for a dissertation on the figure of the alchemist in nineteenth-century British and American Gothic fiction. He also has a MPhil degree in the gothic imagination (with distinction) form Stirling University in Scotland (2001). He is currently working as a lecturer in English Literature at the English Department of Leiden University. His research interests are: the history of popular genres in fiction and film (science fiction, horror, westers), the eighteenth-century cult of sensibility and William Godwin and his circle. He has published various articles on the work of Charles Brockden Brown, Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, as well as on the Dutch western series Arendsoog.
