Achala Upendran is a graduate student in the Bryan Singer Division of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Southern California, where her research focuses on race and representation in science fiction/fantasy media, specifically questions of fan engagement and "race bending." Her writing on popular culture, particularly fantasy books and superhero movies, has appeared in a number of Indian publications.
