The Washington Post, when it isn’t lying about Lewis Libby’s crimes and trying to blame the Democratic Party for the war in Iraq, occasionally runs some shockingly intelligent and well-written articles on film. Check out Matt Hurwitz’s jauntily titled “Hey Sailor!”, a salute to the Fleischer Studio’s classic Popeye cartoons, now coming out in DVD (first episode, a true classic!, with Betty Boop below).
For serious high camp, sample Jonathan Padget’s* ode to gorgeous JoAnna Cameron, heroine of the seventies TV cult “classic,” Isis, also available on DVD, shown below transforming from her schoolteacher secret identity. All together now: “O zephyr winds, which blow on high, lift me now, so I can fly!”**
*Was Johnnie the only boy on his block with an Isis action figure? We’re not telling.
** I never got into Isis back in the day, in part because I was in my thirties, but mainly because I was totally into Lindsay Wagner. Now there was a goddess!
