The following titles from Cahiers du cinéma‘s list of 100 plus beaux films de monde are the French titles of some of the greatest non-French films ever made, but – warning – none of them are literal translations. For example, the literal English translation of Les Enchaînés (above) would be The Enchained Ones, but it is, in fact, the French title of Hitchcock’s Notorious. See if you can guess the English titles of the films below. I’ll post the answers tomorrow.
La Prisonnière du désert (John Ford)
Les Contes de la lune vague (Kenji Mizoguchi)
La Mort aux trousses (Alfred Hitchcock)
Voyage au bout de l’enfer (Michael Cimino)
Comme un torrent (Vincente Minnelli)
Gens de Dublin (John Huston)
Haute pègre (Ernst Lubitsch)
En quatrième vitesse (Robert Aldrich)
