UPDATES 2/23: Christian Liemke offers some 1.33:1/1.85:1 Touch of Evil frame comparisons here. (Via Jim Emerson.)
Jonathan Rosenbaum, in a comment to the previous Touch of Evil post, argued that: "We (I, Murch, and producer Rick Schmidlin) went out of our way to insist in all the press materials that what we were doing WASN'T a director's cut."
With all due respect, Jonathan, the Murch cut WAS, in fact, promoted as "Fully Restored to Orson Welles’ Original Vision" (see above) which I think most viewers would agree is simply director’s-cut-by-another-name.
The real question is: Whose idea was it to crop the film from full aperture to 1.85:1? Surely not Rosenbaum or Murch?
